Student Counsellor

Sowmya is a warm, empathetic and person-centred counsellor currently completing a Master of Counselling, building on a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Psychology and a Graduate Diploma in Counselling. As a trainee counsellor working under the supervision of experienced, registered practitioners, Sowmya is passionate about creating a safe, non-judgemental space where clients feel genuinely heard, understood and valued.
Sowmya’s approach is grounded in Person-Centred Therapy, drawing on an integrative, trauma-informed style to meet each client’s unique needs. Believing that clients are the experts of their own lives, she works collaboratively and with curiosity, supporting people to explore their thoughts and feelings, build self-awareness, and develop practical strategies for the challenges they are facing — always at their own pace.
Sowmya has gained valuable hands-on experience across a range of mental health settings during her training. She has supported patients through companionship and emotional presence in a hospital setting, assisted with youth mental health research by helping to co-facilitate art-based interventions and supporting the administration of standardised anxiety and depression assessments, and observed and assisted within psychotherapy sessions. Her experience has included supporting practitioners with psychological assessment, EMDR and relaxation-based techniques for clients experiencing anxiety, depression and trauma.
Sowmya works with individuals navigating anxiety, depression, grief and loss, life transitions, trauma and everyday stressors. She remains committed to ongoing reflective practice, supervision and professional growth as an emerging counsellor. She looks forward to walking alongside clients as they build resilience, gain clarity and move towards the life they want to live.
Outside the counselling room, Sowmya is a self-described “hobby hunter” — always curious and always chasing something new to learn, whether it’s piano, crochet, sketching, painting, chess or simply working through a Rubik’s Cube. She finds grounding in being intentional with herself: listening to her own immediate needs, responding with self-compassion, and taking long, late-night walks to think and reset.
Meeting new people, through her hobbies, studies or work supporting students from all over the world, is something Sowmya genuinely loves. She finds that every new connection teaches her something about herself as well. As an international student herself, Sowmya has a natural understanding of the challenges young people can face when navigating life transitions, identity and change, often far from home and familiar support systems.
She brings the same gentleness, warmth and genuine curiosity to clients of all ages, including older clients, approaching each person with respect and a real interest in their story. She sees counselling as a mutual journey rather than a one-directional process; she grows alongside every client she works with, and it is this shared, collaborative unfolding that she finds most meaningful about the work.
For Sowmya, counselling is fundamentally about holding space — creating the conditions where a person feels safe enough to be understood and supported enough to grow in their own direction.
